Overview

The Building EJ Tool was developed by the team at Autocase – a sustainability business case software.

The tool was funded by HOK, Stantec, Jacobs, Quinn Evans, and the AIA’s Large Firm Round Table CEO group. Autocase also matched the funds with pro-bono development hours. Throughout the tool’s development, a steering committee helped guide the vision and provided feedback.

This steering committee was made up of sustainability leaders from Stantec, Jacobs, Quinn Evans, and DLR Group, as well as members of the NAACP’s Centering Equity in the Sustainable Building Sector (CESBS) and the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA).

The issues the Building EJ Tool aims to address

Incorporate EJ into projects, Transparency and Data collection
The key issues we heard from this steering committee can be summarized as follows:

Design teams wanted a tool that would:

  • Allow them to integrate environmental justice and social equity considerations into their projects more comprehensively and enable them to document their progress to become more accountable.
    Addressed by the Project Tool
  • They wanted to be able to have the right kind of data at their fingertips.
Addressed by the Project Tool and Resources Hub
  • They wanted a way to be able to reach out to EJ practitioners and local community advocates to leverage their expertise on projects.
Addressed by the Find People Module

Design teams wanted a tool that would:

  • Allow them to integrate environmental justice and social equity considerations into their projects more comprehensively and enable them to document their progress to become more accountable.
Addressed by the Find Projects Module
  • Enable them to justify their needs and communicate historical injustices quantitatively.
Addressed by the Project Tool and Resources Hub
  • Give them the opportunity to reach out directly to project teams as a local resource.
Addressed by the Find Project Module and Find People Module

A final concern that both design team members and community advocates in the steering committee mentioned was to be able to quantify the cumulative impacts of design decisions on affected communities. This is an important topic that we hope to address in future phases of the Building EJ Tool.
